Stages Of My DPS

These are the stages that I have taken to produce my double page spread. I started off by putting the name of the artist on the page first so that I could work around it. As it was the biggest text on the page it had to be the first step so I could know how small to make the images and the interview. I then added my first image so that I knew where to place the text. I added a description of the artist to introduce the readers to the artist: Anita Diaz. I then added my final image so that I could establish a layout for my double page spread. Where the images are placed, it was easier for me to know where to place the interview. I then added all the text on the page and it was able to be read easily as the layout was clear. I added a pull quote of the artist and put it above the artists head so it would be obvious to readers that it's coming from the artist. I tried putting the name of the magazine on the page but it made the page look overcrowded and it then looked like too much colour was on it.

Deconstruction Of My Own DPS

Double Page Spread Comparison To My Flatplan

I have made several major changes from my flat plan that I originally visioned my double page spread looking like. I wanted three images all in different shot types to represent her being handed her crown as she is the 'Queen of hip-hop'. The first shot would've been a long shot with the crown being hand, second shot would've been a medium shot with her holding the crown above her head showing the fans that she finally has it and the third shot would've been her with the crown on her head. I wanted the page split so that those three images could fit and then the actual interview would go on the right. I wanted the name of the magazine at the corner of my magazine but it looked too crowded. I wanted the pull quote to be in graffiti font but I felt as though the graffiti made the magazine seem for boys and the target audience is for mainly girls and teenagers 16-18 years old.

My actual double page spread looks different than how I wanted it to. I only have two images; I stuck with having the crown handed to her but the second image shows off her jewelry. I have the pull quote in the font that I used on my contents page and front cover and I allowed more space for the interview to take place. The colour scheme from the flat plan has differed as my original colour scheme of blue and red did not go well together.

Double Page Spread Final

This is my double page spread final. The biggest image I chose was to show the crown being handed to her. The crown was representative of the fact that she was the 'queen of hip-hop'. She is staring directly at the camera to engage with readers. Her hand is on her chest as she's feeling honoured, her gold jewelery is still being shown which displays the hip-hop genre. The quote that I used on the double page spread says 'I refuse to conform to that industry', out of all the things said in the interview, I found that this was most effective as it's showing readers she stays true to who she is, it also shows how the music industry could be shown. I made sure the pull quote was above the image so it was clear to readers that the artist was the one saying it. I have kept with the same colour scheme throughout my magazine and it is evident here. I have always kept the titles in the burgundy colour as I think it draws more attention to the page as it's bold and bright. The gold are used to show the interviewer asking the question and the responses are in black so that readers can tell the difference between the question and the reply. I made a little introduction as from my research into looking at double page spreads, most appear to introduce the artist before they start the interview, I mainly saw this in hip-hop magazines so I took inspiration from that. In the interview I have highlighted the genre and spoke about artists from that genre. The artist name is the biggest text on the page which is effective into drawing readers to see who she is. It is clear who the artist is.

Contents Page Feedback

Contents Page Comparison

My contents page flat plan is to the left and my actual contents page is on the right. The layout has changed drastically. The colour scheme changed from a blue 'contents' to it being burgundy which is the colour of my masthead on my front cover. I have added another section, on my flat plan I only had features and fashion but I added exclusives to make the main artist interview stand out. How I wanted my model to look has kept the same as I wanted someone with curly hair and a jacket which is what she has. I have added a border on the top of my contents page and added the masthead into the header border. On the flat plan I had just plain black writing but in my contents page I have added gold colour to make the subheadings stand out. I moved the image more down as having the image up left a lot of space on the page and it didn't look right.

Contents Page Final

This is my final contents page after I have made all my changes. The colour scheme links in with my front cover as I have kept with black, white, burgundy and gold. I have included the magazines name onto my contents page and a date at the bottom to show when the issue of the magazine is. The features are linked to all the texts that were on the front cover. I have made features mainly to do with music and made a fashion section just to add more to the magazine. I wanted to make the magazine appeal to my target audience so I wrote about things that would be what teenagers read about. The Hip-Hop genre is evident on my contents page as I have my artist wearing gold jewelry and I have mentioned Hip-Hop related things in the features. I stuck with the idea to make 'contents' abstract as I thought it would look boring just being in a straight line. I have it going around the models head so that more space was given to write the features and still look edgy which is the feel I wanted for my overall magazine.

Contents Page Alignment

In these images I am showing that I have drawn a line to make sure everything on my contents page is aligned with everything. On the first image I have made sure all the features were in a straight line so that it didn't look messy and that the layout was simple and easy to read. On the last image, I aligned the date of the magazine with the s from the longest line under my fashion feature. Having everything aligned made my contents page look more presentable.

Contents Page Final Layout

The left image is my final layout choice for my contents page. The right image is how my contents page looked before I changed the layout. I felt the layout on the right looked to squashed to the bottom and hard to read whereas the layout on the left is clear to read and and very simple. I have added a header border to include social media websites where readers can find out more stories. As teenagers are my target audience and they mainly use social networking sites, I thought it would be useful to include this on my contents page as it would be easy to access stories from the magazine as they are constantly on the internet or on their phones. I have included the magazine masthead in the header border so that readers know that it's from the same magazine. Also the title 'contents' on the right image took up to much space on the page which left little space for me to change any of the texts, I knew I had to decrease the size of the title to make more space for my features. I put the date on the bottom of the magazine so that readers can establish all these stories are new.

Contents Page Features

These are the features that I have chosen to put on my contents page. I have split them up into three different sections one being the features that would appear near the front of the magazine, the exclusives are the main interviews to deal with the artists of the magazine. Anita Diaz is the main artist on my front cover so her interview is highlighted by being put under exclusives so readers know only this magazine will have her interview. The descriptions of the subheadings highlight music and shows how it's a music magazine. The genre of the music is illustrated in the beginning sentence for Anita Diaz's interview. I wanted the features to relate to the music magazine genre and I wanted the genre to be noticeable to readers. The last section is fashion which links in to Hip-Hop as it's talking about Hip-Hop fashion. The features that are on this contents page are linked to my front cover as I have put them in here and put descriptions of it so readers can get an idea of what to expect in the magazine.

Contents Page Comparison To Vibe Contents Page

The image on the left is my contents page so far. For my contents page I was taking inspiration from a Vibe magazine contents page. I wanted to make the words 'contents' like how vibe magazines was. I wanted it to have an abstract, edgy feel to it which I feel I have incorporated on my contents page so far. I have chosen to put the image on the left hand side and all the writing on the right hand side as it has a simple layout just like the vibe contents page and just how I wanted my contents page to be. Unlike the vibe contents page, I have put a section that says 'exclusives' to make my main artist on the front cover stand out as she has her own section. I have decided to put borders around the subheadings unlike the vibe contents page as I feel it makes the contents page stand out more and make the issues more noticeable on the page. The vibe contents page decided to choose all black writing whereas I chosen to have gold writing on the subheadings to have readers distinguish between the features and the descriptions of it. My main title is the burgundy colour that I used from my front cover, I wanted to link the contents page and front cover well together so that it's noticeable to readers that they are part of the same magazine. The vibe magazine has chosen to go with a black and white colour scheme and I have chosen to go for a burgundy, gold, black and white colour scheme. I have included a website and date at the top of my contents page unlike the vibe magazine one.

Contents Page Changes To Layout

These are four different images of changes that I have made to my contents page. The first image shows a border around both 'exclusives' and 'features'. The second image shows the border being only around 'exclusives'. The third image shows border being around both 'exclusives' and 'features' but this time features is in captial letters. The last image the border is around all three subheadings and the subheadings are in capitals. I decided to go with the fourth image as the borders being around the subheadings make the words stand out and differentiates from the other writing on the page. I have put 'exclusives' 'features' and 'fashion' in capital letters as it stands out and is more effect to see all the different sections of the magazine. It gives the contents page more of an edgy feel as some of the colours are in gold, black and white and some are in capitals.

Contents Page Text Choices

The font that I chose was 'LA Headlights BTN'. I used this same font on my front cover so I wanted the same font on my contents page as they would link together. I used size 16 for the subheading and I used size 12 for the description as it easier for readers to distinguish between the subheadings and descriptions. I was debating whether the subheadings should be all black or all gold or make the numbers gold and the rest black but in the end I decided to have all gold. From the above image I have shown how it would look for each of them and I found the gold stood out on the page more. The first image to the left shows how it looks all in gold and I think it's effective in making the different features stand out. The readers would be instantly drawn to the colours on the page so the gold makes readers draw towards the subheadings easier so they know what they are reading about for the magazine. The second image to the left shows the 'contents' words. I have used the same effects on my title contents that I used on my masthead on the front cover. Bevel and emboss, drop shadow and inner   shadow were used to make the title stand out to readers and   look similar to how the masthead looked.

Contents Page Colour Scheme

For my contents page I have chosen to keep with the same colour scheme that was on my front cover. The contents page here is not finished but the colours are evident. I have chosen the same colour from my first models lipstick to be on the masthead again. The lipstick colour is similar to the one on my second model so it all links. The gold colour is from my first models gold chain and again the colour is similar to my second models gold chain. I had both my models wear similar things as it would be easier to link together. I have stuck with 4 main colours: black, white, gold and burgundy. It's evident that the contents page comes with the front cover from the colours that I have chosen. I have made the main feature subheadings in gold to make them stand out. The description of them are in black so that readers can differentiate between the subheadings and descriptions. I have made 'fashion' and 'feature' be in black so that it stands out and readers can tell the difference between the different parts of the magazine as there is a fashion section and a section more to do with what goes on.

Contents Page Image Choices

I chose between the image on the left and the image on the right to have for my contents page and I decided to go with the image on the left. I felt as though the image on the right was too light and didn't seem right for the contents page. I wanted the makeup to be a prominent part of her face on the contents page and that couldn't be seen well with that image. It didn't seem engaging to readers and the positioning of the image took up too much space on the page so I barely had enough room to write down all the features for my magazine. The image on the left is a medium close up so it allows readers to see her face and her clothes more clearer. She looks more engaging in the image on the left so that attracts more readers than what the image on the right would've done. I asked people from my target audience which image would look better and all of them said the left hand image as her face was clearer and the jewelry stood out more.

Contents Page Photo Manipulation

The image on the left shows her before I used any tools on her face. On the right hand side I have used the burn tool to brighten her eyes and make them stand out on the page. I made this change because I feel as though it would draw in more readers if the eyes looked brighter as you are instantly drawn to it. The face looks more awake and more engaging. The brightening of eyes draws more attention to the makeup she's wearing.

In this picture it shows the transition from a light shade of lipstick to a dark shade. I chose to darken the lipstick as it draws more attention to the model's face. It made the look more edgy and bold which is a look I wanted on my contents page. The lipstick allows the whole face to stand out and this makes a reader pay attention to her. From seeing Hip-Hop magazines, the females usually wear dark lipsticks to make their selves stand out on the page.

In this picture I started playing around with the lighting of the image. The original image is on the left and the altered image is on the right. I wanted to see which would draw more attention to readers in so I asked my target audience and most said the image without the changed lighting. I feel as though the lightened image looked too peaceful and not bold or edgy and that's not the look that I visioned for my contents page. I stuck with the original image as the lighting was better and it made the features in her face stand out more than if her face was covered in bright light.

Front Cover Feedback

Sharna - I really like the colour, i love the colour scheme, the use of colour is really good and it matches the main image well.

Jhineil - I like the use of colours and how you have sampled from both her lips and necklace. I really liked that you have put the + sign in, looks simple but effective. Your cover is very minimal but it is very simple and gives a feel of the genre.

Dawn - I like the colour scheme and I think the image matches the genre. The masthead attracts the reader in.

Theo - I think the magazine cover is very effective because it emphasises the usage of minimal/ basic colours to grab the readers attention. Having the logo as well as the artist/similar colour to her lipstick is very effective and also having some of the artists name and pull quote in a shade to the chain, shows usage of colour sampler.

Deconstruction Of Contents Page And Comparison To A Front Cover

Final Front Cover

This is my final front cover. I created this using Photoshop and included most things that a magazine would have. I have included a bar header, masthead, pull quote, graphics, bar code, price and sale lines. Looking back at the steps that I have taken to create this music magazine, I can see how I've made the right decision to change the colour scheme, price and adding more features.

Adding more features has helped my music magazine front cover stand out as the features are things that would interest my target audience. I prefer burgundy and gold colour scheme compared to the blue and red one that I originally was going to go with. Everything links in with my artist so it's easy to see where the colour scheme comes from.

I originally wanted to incorporate both Hip-Hop and Pop into the magazine to create a Hip-Pop magazine as it was unique and I hadn't seen any other magazines do this. I changed my idea to it being just a Hip-Hop magazine, I found it was easier to find other magazines which I could compare it to and it would've been harder trying to find a magazine that is both Hip- Hop and Pop.

I am pleased with how my front cover turned out. How the front cover looks is different to how I thought it would look from the start of making it but I think it looks better and the layout is easy to read for readers which was my most important task. I took inspiration from both Vibe and XXL magazine which I feel is shown in my music magazine. The layout of my music magazine is similar to some of the issues that Vibe or XXL have distributed.

Front Cover Link To Research

From the research results that I got, I have gone against the colours that had the best response and I decided to do different colours which linked with my main artist image. The colours chosen were red, blue, black and white and the only colours I have chosen to go with from the results were the black and white. I then changed my mind to a burgundy and gold colour scheme because it stood out and the burgundy and gold colours go well together.

From the research results, most people said their favourite genre of music was Hip-Hop. When i first started my magazine I wanted to try do a Hip- Pop magazine which is where I would've incorporated the Hip-Hop genre and Pop genre together but pretty early on I decided to just make a Hip-Hop genre magazine. I feel as though the front cover shows evidence that the genre is Hip-Hop. The gold jewelry represent what a typical Hip-Hop artist would wear. I took the colour from the chain and put that on my font. The colour gold represents wealth, success, achievement and triumph. These are all representative of who she is, achieving success and triumphing despite struggles she has faced.

A question that I asked in my questionnaire was 'what would most attract you to a music magazine cover'. Most of the target audience answered the artist on the front cover, I made sure my artist was doing angle of gaze so that it felt as if she was engaging with readers. I made sure the face was perfect so I perfected any spots or darkened the makeup to focus on the artist. I used spot healing brush in photoshop to get a better perfected look. The second most important was the colour scheme and the colour scheme is bold and captivating to draw in the target audience. The burgundy colour is more a feminine colour so I'm meeting my target audience needs.

Another question that I asked my target audiebce in the questionnaire was 'what is the highest amount of money you would spend on a magazine'. Eight people chose £0-2 so I decided at first to have the price at £1.50 as it was in the middle and not too cheap but not too pricy. After considering the price, I decided to change it to £3.50 because I felt £1.50 was too cheap for a music magazine. The price isn't too high and it isn't too low so it would be worth buying as there are several different features in the magazine that are worth reading and exclusive.

Dreamville Provisional Front Cover

This is my final provisional front cover. I have drawn my artist to have wavy/curly hair as I decided that would look best on the front cover of my music magazine. She is wearing gold jewelery to represent the Hip-Hop genre. I have made it clear that I want her wearing makeup as the eyeliner stands out and so does the lipstick. I wanted the pull quote to be in the centre of her body so that readers could know that they are her words. There are little features on this but on my actual magazine cover several more features will be added to fill up space on the page and attract readers to all these different issues.

Stages In Photshop For My Magazine Front Cover

This is showing the transition that has happened for me to get to my final front cover piece. I started off with a plain white background and used the magnetic lasso tool to cut out my model out accurately and then I applied it to the white background. I then added my header border to see if it would look good on the front cover and I feel as though it made the magazine stand out instantly. I added Hip Hop artists names onto the header bar and then added my masthead. I started creating my features on the front cover afterwards making sure everything was aligned. Bit by bit I added more features ensuring I added colour to the artist names in the exclusives section. After completing my features on the right hand side, I added the bar code and price to make the magazine seem more like a real one. I started work on the left hand side where I was putting my main artists name. I made sure to duplicate the layer so that the name stood out more. Other than the masthead being the biggest thing on the front cover, I made sure the name was prominent and stood out from the other text. I then added the issue underneath the artists name to let readers know that they are linked together and that the issue is to do with my artist. I added my last feature on the left hand side and focused on putting on a pull quote. I changed the pull quote several times because of what it looked like and finally stuck with 'I made it'. The second to last image displays the last stages of my magazine coming together. I applied several effects to make the pull quote stand out, the thickness and colour of the pull quote is representative of the gold jewelry she's wearing. The last stage was changing the name from Leoca Smith to Anita Diaz which flowed better with the magazine and the genre.

Difference In Positions

Here are two screenshots of the front cover for my magazine. I'm showing the difference between how the bar code looks being horizontal and vertical and why I've made the decision to make it a certain way. I prefer the bar code being vertical as it uses more space and and shows the price clearly. The horizontal bar code takes attention away from the pull quote and intervenes more with the main image on the cover. The vertical bar code links in with my flat plan and provisional front cover as I drew them with the bar codes in different directions. Overall my decision stuck to it being vertical as my target audience agreed that it looked better that way.

These are all the different positions and wordings that I thought of for the pull quote. The original pull quote was 'this is all I've ever wanted', I felt as though this was too long and didn't draw in a reader. It looked weird on the main image and after playing around with different layouts of how it could look, I decided it was too long and I need something short and snappy. The next pull quote I thought of was 'My dream's come true', again this didn't feel like it would draw in readers and after asking people who answered my questionnaire what they thought, they said it didn't intrigue them. I then thought of 'I finally made it' but this didn't look right on the artist and I wanted a shorter pull quote. From that I got 'I made it', to me it pulled in readers and was quite effective in wanting readers to read more of the magazine, there was a lot of unanswered questions that could come out of the pull quote such as: how did they make it?, what are they going to do now? and did they overcome any struggles whilst trying to make it?

Cover Layout/ Photoshop

The left one was is my provisional front cover. It is different to how my first front cover flatplan looked. There are many differences between my first draft flatplan, my provisional front cover and the photshop front cover. In first draft flatplan, I initially wanted the artist to have straight hair and I had few features on my cover. I changed the amount of features on my front cover because of the results of my feedback for my flatplans. One person stated how more space should be used up on my front cover and I've used up the space now.The artist's body language was different, I wanted her to have her hand above her head to show confidence but I found it to be too provocative for the target audience for females. That would've appealed more if I had males as my target audience. I didn't have a header bar above the mastheads with the list of other Hip-Hop artists but I changed that in my provisional front cover and made sure that was incorporated in  my front cover on photoshop. I felt as though with the header bar it outlined the names more and the names were more evident than before when they were barely visible. I made sure to change the masthead name from 'Dramville' to 'Dreamville'. Dreamville is what I originally wanted but I spelt it wrong. The colour scheme from the first flatplan has changed significantly, I have no longer gone with the red, blue, black and white colour scheme. Although I have kept the black and white colours, I changed the blue and red to gold and burgundy to link with what my artist was wearing. I took the gold from the gold jewelery that she wearing and the burgundy from the colour of her lipstick. The makeup stayed the same but the price of the magazine has changed. The price of £1.50 was too cheap for a magazine so I changed the price to £3.50 which is more reasonable for the amount of content that would be in the magazine.

I have changed what the features of the magazine would be. For my flatplan, too much Drake was on the front cover. It had the interview with him and what happened between him and Chris Brown, I didn't want readers to feel as though the magazine was mainly about Drake and not the artist on the front cover. The name of my artist has changed. It changed from Leoca Johnson to Leoca Smith and then finally Anita Diaz. The name Leoca I felt didn't fit right on the magazine and it sounded to lengthy especially with the surnames. Anita Diaz sounds more snappy and sounds like a singer name. The main artist hair has changed, I was fond on having the artist with straight hair but I found the curly hair added a certain edginess to the magazine front cover. For the artists name on the cover, I have always put them in colour so those are the things that stand out. At first from the results that I collected, I wanted the artist to be superimposed over the masthead but in the end I saw how it looked with the artist superimposed and the artist without and it looked better without the artist being superimposed. The pull quote has changed, I felt as though 'This is all I've ever wanted' was too long and wasn't short and snappy. 'I made it' is more short and snappy which I think is more effective for a reader. It pulls in the target audience and they are able to discover how they made it. For my provisional front cover, the bar code was layed horizontally which I felt didn't look right. I tested out which way the bar code looked best and it looked best vertically so I decided to stay vertically from my draft flatplan.

Features On Front Cover

These were the features that were going to be on the front cover of my magazine. The first feature is an exclusive interview with Drake, the genre of the magazine is highlighted when it says 'Hip Hop King' it shows that the genre of music is Hip Hop and that Drake is associated with that genre. The second issue is Jhene Aiko dishing the dirt on her love life. This attracts a reader as they would want to know more about her love life. Jhene Aiko links in with this magazine as at the top of the masthead her name is there which shows how she will feature in this magazine. The third feature is the '50 greatest albums of all time'. This shows readers that they will be finding out the 50 greatest albums of the Hip Hop genre. Although it doesn't say Hip Hop within the feature, its evident that the albums will be linked with the genre because its a Hip Hop magazine. The final feature is the sell line saying 'The Queen of Hip-Hop finally taking her crown.
Since then I have changed the colour scheme and changed the wordings of the features. I have chosen the colour gold to have the artists names in so that their names stand out but don't overshadow the main artists name in burgundy. The colour gold was taken from the colour of her gold chain. I wanted my colour scheme to link into what my artist was wearing. Although my target audience chose the colour scheme red and blue, I have changed it to gold and burgundy as these are the colours associated with my artist and I think the colours stand out more than how the blue and red did. I've added another feature onto the magazine which is showing a sneak peak of the Grammys 2014. I wanted an issue that would excite my target audience and I wanted to showcase one of the main award shows around. The first initial idea for my Drake feature was saying 'Hip Hop King Interview' but I changed it as I already had the main artist with 'The Queen Of Hip Hop' and it would've seemed like Drake was as important as the main artist, so instead I changed it to news about his album as he's recently released a new one so it would be interesting to find out about. I kept most of the font black to keep it looking simplistic but I added colours to highlight people's names. I added more features as the feeback from my flatplans made me realise I needed to use up more space.

Shots Taken

These were the final three pictures that I chose between to be the front cover image. In the end I chose the one on the right hand side because the lighting captured her face and made the gold jewelry stand out. I had my artist wear a white t-shirt for the shoot as it blended well with a white background and would make everything else such as the makeup and jewelry stand out. My artist is wearing makeup which is typically what females wear so this would appeal to my target audience which is 16-18 year olds and female. Females usually wear makeup and the clothing is very simple so it allowed all focus to direct to her face. She is giving angle of gaze to connect with the readers and make the readers feel as though she is looking at them and engaging with them. The middle image was too dark and I felt as though lighting played a big part in how good the image would come out. From the image being dark, her clothing is hard to see and so is her face, the makeup is not visible in the darker image and as the artist on the front cover was considered to be the thing that most attracts a reader to the magazine from the results i got from my questionnaire, my main focus was getting a good shot that allowed the readers to see the artist in the best light and I feel as though the right hand represented that best. The left hand one was similar to the right hand image but I feel as though she looked too serious in the image on the left for it to be on the front cover. The expression in her face is the same as what I drew for my flatplan. I originally wanted my artist to have straight hair but instead it's curly and it was easy to work with.

Font Decisions And Masthead

These are the fonts that I was choosing out of to be the font I use for my masthead. The ones on the left looked like children drew them or a horror theme. Some of them I really liked but looked like the magazine would be aimed at more males than females. I felt some of those fonts would be too much for the masthead as I wanted the artist to be the main attraction on the front cover. I was originally going to choose the one highlighted as it's simple and reminds me of the masthead for Vibe magazine and as I am taking inspiration from that magazine, it linked well together. The colour scheme and masthead has since changed from that red colour to a burgundy, the burgundy colour links with the lipstick colour that my artist has chosen to wear. Below is how the burgundy works well with the white background and goes well against the header bar. My masthead position has changed from what I orginally wanted it to be. I said that I would have the artist superimposed over the masthead as I wanted most focus to direct to the artist but after playing around with the image and masthead, I have determined that the masthead looks better over the artist. The font is very bold and in capital letters to allow the readers to establish what the magazine name is. I used the font LA Headlights BTN for most of the text on my front cover, it was simple and easy to read which is what I wanted for my front cover.

For the masthead I ended up using none of those fonts in the above image and instead used the below masthead. I have used several different blending options to make it stand out and look like a real masthead. I used the effects: drop shadow, inner shadow and  bevel and emboss to create the effect of the masthead popping out and standing out on the page. There's a difference between what I was going to do with the red and blue colour scheme compared to the burgundy and gold one. The red masthead at first looked really dull and flat and didn't really stand out and establish the name of the magazine. I also feel as though that font didn't work with the main image and didn't work as a whole on the magazine front cover. The red and blue didn't work well on top of the header bar whereas the white and burgundy do and also the font size is made bigger to showcase the artists more.
